By April it’s definitely time to start looking ahead to the warmer seasons and now is the time to start booking in some fun occasions with friends!
Do you find yourself day-dreaming of rosé, warm skin and endless evenings?
With the summer season practically upon us (I mean it’s been sunny for a whole week which is akin to full on British summertime!), I’m sharing some of my favourite fun day out ideas for summer.
Now is the time to plan special dates in your diary for occasions with friends and family. I hope today’s post will help you to pop a few fun day out ideas in your calendar!
3 Fun Day Out Ideas For Summer
1 – A Day At The Races
There is something so typically British about a day at the races. I grew up scouring the papers for coverage of Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. There are rare few occasions when getting properly dressed up is required, and it’s such fun to plan a day out where it’s part of the theatre of it all.
For me, even when attending something special, I like to choose an outfit which is comfortable and feels totally ‘me’.
This full length ‘Eternity’ dress from Phase Eight is both comfortable and beautiful; it has the prettiest detail in the back.
In general for dress shapes, I always feel comfortable in something nipped in at the waist, which then flows down.
Tight dresses just aren’t my jam.
Phase Eight has the most gorgeous selection of dresses perfect for the races – have a peruse here. They also have an amazing selection of occasion wear in general so if you have a wedding, or special party coming up in the summer, then I recommend having a look round.
Be mindful if you’re heading to the races that some venues have dress codes; therefore be sure to check these before settling on your outfit for the day.
When it comes to hats and fascinators, I like to choose a neutral colour that I can re-use. I tend to rotate the same accessories time and time again. It can be really hard to find a classic headpiece on the high street, but again Phase Eight is an amazing destination for affordable timeless fascinators and hats. Have a little look here.
A day at the races is the perfect day out to plan with a group of friends (SO fun!) and it’s also a great occasion to enjoy with your family.
2 – A Fancy Picnic
Summertime is the season of the picnic and there is nothing more enjoyable and relaxing than setting up camp for the day.
Certain events encourage you to picnic (like a day at the races!) and other times the picnic is an occasion in itself.
After a good little nose around Pinterest, I found a tonne of inspiration for luxurious picnics. And when I say ‘luxurious’ it doesn’t take a whole lot of extra effort!
Here are a few things which I feel make a picnic luxe:
- Lots of blankets
- Lots of cushions (I literally hoik them off of my sofa!)
- A crate which can be used to transport things, and then as a makeshift table. Mind. Blown.
- Lots of picky bits of food. I love fruit, baguettes and charcuterie-type pieces. Nothing which requires cutlery!
- A lovely bottle of wine, or some water with lemon and lime in it.
- Portable speakers. It’s so much better to play music through speakers than through a tinny phone ????
It’s also super fun if you’re planning a picnic to pack some games which people can play if the day stretches out.
Disclaimer – I say this as someone who normally watches the games being played haha!
3 – A Local(ish) Road Trip
How often do you actually explore the area you live in?
Planning a road trip within an hour or so of your home can shed light on so many amazing places you would otherwise have not discovered.
On a nice day one of my very favourite things is to go on an impromptu road trip!
Takeaway coffee . . . bundle into the car . . . and set off on a little adventure.
Bonus – the summertime is the perfect season for simply looking out of the car windows and enjoying the view.
Living in the countryside I absolutely adore watching the colours change as the crops come into bloom. Right now the fields near us are the most vivid yellow.
If you’re based in the UK too there are SO many beautiful stately homes and country hotels which you can pop along to for afternoon tea and a little stroll.
What’s Your Take?
What are you looking forward to this summer season? Do you have any special events planned with friends? Do you have any day out ideas you can share?! I’d love to hear your favourite things to do too!

It’s so nice to be back on the blog after Big Small Business! I have so much to share with you from our first conference, but for now (whilst I process all the aftermath – it was like getting married ????!) I’m happy to be back in this little cosy corner of the internet with you.
Love, Monica x
