“I want to, want to, open an email”
I am seriously happy to see the back of last week’s flu. A lot of the time we feel invincible, and then ‘bam’ we get a reminder that we’re not.
All the celebration emojis for being back ????????????????. I thought I’d start this week’s posts with a discussion about a daily task we most-likely all share – emails. And more specifically newsletter subscriptions.
I like being on top of my inbox. Being in control of it gives me a sense of satisfaction and calm which is probably disproportionate to the task itself.
I’ve consciously been un-subscribing to emails recently (subscriptions and shopping spam can be such a time drain), and it got me to thinking about the ones which remain in my inbox. Why does one subscription sit favourably over another?
For me, I want to want to open an email. When a subscription lands in my inbox, there has to be some excitement. Some added value, or simply some fun.
Below I have rounded up the newsletter subscriptions I value – and open. They are a mix of business advise, brands I love, newsy newsletters and more.
I hope you’ll enjoy getting to know them, I’d love to know of any newsletters you are signing up for, that you’d advise getting involved with too.
You can leave me a comment with suggestions at the bottom of this post, or tweet me your thoughts.
11 Newsletter Subscriptions I Truly Value
1 – Jenna Kutcher
You guys may well remember Jenna from our interview with her earlier this year. Jenna is a wedding photographer, watercolour artist and educator based in Wisconsin. I first stumbled across Jenna’s work through an Instagram class she led, and since then I have signed up to just about every Jenna-resource out there. Emails included.
Whilst many emails can feel sales-y, and generally not remotely useful, Jenna’s emails are always super inspiring and ones which I can’t wait to click through to read.
What do they include? Personal thoughts on being an entrepreneur, and guidance for following your dreams. Jenna is a fellow creative entrepreneur and she has a no holding back policy when it comes to sharing the highs and lows of pursuing goals. I love that Jenna’s personal life informs her professional one and vice versa, I have learnt so much from her about how to share yourself through your work.

2 – Emma Gannon
Emma is an author, speaker, blogger, podcaster and writer (and clearly has superpowers) and her newsletter is always a welcome addition to my inbox on a Sunday morning. In an age where blogs are people’s businesses, I think sometimes we forget to share the day-to-day in favour of sharing evergreen content (I know this is something I think about all the time). I love that Emma’s newsletters are a general catchup on what’s going on. Yes Emma makes some incredibly poignant arguments, I adored her piece on ‘doing what you love’ (which you can actually catch up on, on her blog), but she also shares musings from all over the place.
I guess Emma’s newsletter is exactly that – a news-letter.
The way in which Emma writes is so direct and amicable – I know this is said a lot but really it is like you could be sat with Emma having a conversation.
I’m not the only one who thinks so, Emma’s newsletter has been recommended by Grazia, The Metro and Harper’s Bazaar amongst others.

3 – Amanda Start, The Online Stylist
I subscribe to Amanda’s newsletters to stay on top of her blog. This is most definitely an email subscription I love seeing in my inbox.
If you are not already familiar with Amanda’s blog – now’s the time to get so. Amanda is a monochrome maven, valuing pared-back every day essentials elevated by beautiful details.

4 – Lauren Hooker, Elle & Co.
My love of the Elle & Co. blog is well-documented. If you are signed up to our own newsletter series – Croissant Reading – you’ll know that I frequently link to Lauren’s business-savvy posts. In an age of information, Lauren breaks down the questions we all want to know as bloggers and creative entrepreneurs, and answers them in a digestible way.
Lauren’s newsletters land in my inbox every Tuesday, and always contain one actionable 15 minute step to help progress my business. I know that when one of Lauren’s emails lands, that I am getting value from opening it.
If you are pursuing your own business goals, this is one email worth signing up to.

5 – Hero
Hero is one of my favourite independent stores. I adore not only visiting in-person, but also checking in with them across all of their social platforms.
Right now Hero is celebrating its 2 year anniversary, and as a special treat they’re sending out a discount or gift of some sort EVERY day of October with each email! I’ve already gone a little stir crazy receiving the temptation of a 15% discount on beautiful cashmere, and stationery to make you (me) swoon.
Hero are about to launch a new newsletter series too, I’m excited to see what other inbox goodness they have to come!

6 – Justine Wall, The Plain Kitchen
Justine’s blog The Plain Kitchen, is such a beautiful un-fussy site, I love perusing her recipes.
Much like The Online Stylist this is a bit of a newsletter cheat, as I get updates of Justine’s blog posts via email, but again – it helps me to keep on top of her gorgeous-looking recipes, and beautifully-written posts.
I have been lucky enough to try Justine’s cooking first-hand and I can tell you it is earth-shatteringly delicious. You know when you leave a meal thinking “yep, I could probably have that EVERY day and be happy”.
If you are looking for regular recipe inspiration, Justine’s newsletter is well worth signing up to. Many of her recipes feature healthy takes on classics, and as a gluten free eater herself they’re totally friendly for fellow GF peeps.

7 – Ella Gregory, Cocos Tea Party
As a newsletter subscriber, what I look for when signing up to an email subscription is something extra. Ella creates tailored content every week, direct to her subscribers inboxes. If you don’t sign up – you’re not getting that content.
As many of you know, Ella and I are close friends, but friend bias aside, her blog is one which I read daily.
If you’re interested in learning about which high st stores are currently stocking the best products, or what to be looking forward to this season, this is a newsletter for you.

8 – Emily Schuman, Cupcakes & Cashmere
Emily’s Friday newsletter is probably one of the first I really picked up on as a regular email I was excited to open. I already read Cupcakes & Cashmere a handful of times a week, and the Friday newsletter is a lovely way to round off the work days. I like that the newsletter gives a more behind-the-scenes look in to the running of the C&C business, and that there is a personal note from Emily each time.
The Cupcakes & Cashmere team just re-designed their newsletter to incorporate more news from the whole C&C staff, which I also love delving in to. I really like hearing the various voices of the Cupcakes & Cashmere team coming through. Plus I basically just daydream about living in LA!

9 – Lily & Lionel
Lily & Lionel are one of my very favourite brands. I’ve got to know the brand and its team over the years and I can wholeheartedly say that they are one of the nicest teams.
Aside from lusting over their beautiful new Autumn/Winter collection, I am always ready to click ‘open’ on their ‘Sunday Styling’ newsletters.
I love it when a brand puts a spin on their mail-outs, and the styling series is genuinely helpful.

10 – Baublebar
To say I am obsessed with Baublebar’s newsletters, would be to say that Oli likes Christmas a ‘little bit’. NB: Oli goes in to festive lock down from December 1st ????
Baublebar, for those of you not familiar with the brand already, is a company which specialises in fashion jewellery. I don’t know how they manage it, but there is always a stunning new collection of jewellery ready to be explored.
The Baublebar newsletter showcases their latest jewellery offerings in a short, concise and beautiful way, and it also shares styling tips for tricky-to-wear trends.
A recent email for instance included tips for how to wear a choker necklace, if you (like me) are a ‘I’d never wear a choker necklace’ person.

11 – Croissant Reading
I couldn’t round up newsletters I feel you may like to subscribe to, without mentioning our own flagship newsletter – Croissant Reading.
Long-time readers may recall that Croissant Reading was a weekly series on The Elgin Avenue, sharing links from around the web to be enjoyed at your leisure.
The official blurb fro Croissant Reading is: “Croissant reading. | |ˈkrwasɒ̃| ˈriːdɪŋ |[mass noun] the action or skill of reading, whilst simultaneously consuming pastries. Often enjoyed in conjunction with freshly brewed coffee, and many hours spent in a cosy bed.” It’s a tongue-in-cheek take on one of my favourite weekend pastimes.
Croissant Reading is now housed exclusively as a weekly newsletter, sent out every Saturday morning to our subscribers.
I absolutely adore putting together the email, and I love the thought of our email being a part of those precious ‘zen’ moments over your weekend.
If you are interested in signing up to Croissant Reading, you can do so here.
What’s your take?
That’s it from me guys – 11 of the newsletter subscriptions I adore, and yes, actually open.
I would love to hear of any newsletters you are signed up to which you would recommend to your fellow readers, or me too. I am always chuffed to receive your own recommendations – I have found some of my favourite sites, IG accounts and people via your great tips!

Have a great start to your weeks!
