When I dreamt up this blog post, it was a pretty selfish endeavour. I mean, researching the best of autumn & winter candles? For work?!
Some days I am especially grateful for my job. The mix of spicy scents perfumed our home for days and I revisited our living room more times than was justifiable.
With the sudden chill we’re experiencing in the UK, candles are ALL the more necessary. Their hygge-inducing properties are second to none.
The moment I light a candle I am transported to a cosier place.
I love lighting a gorgeous scent a little while before having guests over too; it’s a super quick way to lend an air of elegance.
In a bid to help you to find your favourite scent this season (and you know – for the selfish reasons divulged above 😂), I’ve rounded up some of my very favourite wintery candles which I think you’ll adore too!
Pop on your slippers, brew yourself a cup of something delicious, and settle into a virtual perusal of some of the loveliest candle scents around . . .
A ROUNDUP OF THE BEST WINTERY
CANDLE SCENTS AND MY FAVOURITE BRANDS
When you think of luxury scented candles, you likely think of Jo Malone. The brand is known for its stunning fragrances in perfume and candle form.
Let me introduce you then, to a couple of scents which may be new to you, and which are entirely delicious (and equally decadent) for the cooler months . . .
Velvet Rose & Oud is a dark floral scent, undercut with the smokiness of oud wood. This is a more intense, warming scent than a more summery floral – making for the perfect candle to light over the colder months.
English Oak & Redcurrant is one of Jo Malone’s latest fragrance launches. You would have been hard-pushed to have missed the launch on Instagram this year, many a beautiful occasion was created by the Jo Malone team in celebration. I mean, just how gorgeous does that table decor look?! The English Oak & Redcurrant scent is a fresh scent, with hints of mandarin and white musk. This is what I’d call a ‘daytime winter scent’. The oak still lends a muskiness, whilst the redcurrant, rose and green mandarin lend a fresh bite.
I’ve bought Anthropologie’s candles for years, and this year their scent offering is the best yet!
If I had to choose a favourite, the Pumpkin scent is completely irresistible.
Anthropologie offers an array of sizes for their candles, which is perfect for when you’re choosing how and who to gift. A small votive may be ideal for your BFF, whilst a large one may be perfect for your Mother in law . . . or yourself! Bonus: the votives are so incredibly beautiful, they’re WELL worth holding on to.
You can empty out the wax (follow this tutorial) and fill the votive with anything you’d like. I use my small Capri jars for paperclips, and my larger votives for flowers or potted plants.
These are candles you’ll continue to love, long past their amazing aromas.
Shay & Blue
Shay & Blue is a new-to-me brand, and I’ve fallen fast and hard.
Founded in 2012 by Dom De Vetta, Shay & Blue is a boutique perfumery offering a range of deeply and beautifully scented products, including candles, fragrances and bath & body items. All of Shay & Blue’s products are produced in East London, so you can be assured that each and every product has been made with love.
The Amber Rose scent has a beautiful masculine quality which compliments the rose’s delicate scent perfectly. I much prefer a smokier floral in the cooler months.
The Blood Oranges candle is, as its name suggests, a citrus scent, which again has a depth and warmth to it.
Both of these may be new to you too (just as they were for me!), but if you’re looking to take a punt on a new name – make it Shay & Blue.
I was genuinely deflated when I realised I’d burnt through my candles – can you see how close they are to being finished in the photos above?! Cue: an immediate re-order!
It’s worth noting too that the packaging for Shay & Blue is truly beautiful – perfect for gifting.
The White Company
The White Company is another company whose name is synonymous with cult-status candles.
The seasonal scents, named fittingly: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, are the perfect perfumed incarnations of their season’s namesake.
Enter a home or space which ‘smells like Christmas’ and the owner has likely lit a ‘Winter’ candle by The White Company. This candle has such cult-like status, that even Oli can identify it!
He LOVES it!
The second scent worth mentioning in The White Company’s A/W offerings this year is the Highland Escape candle. A combination of “spiced saffron, earthy vetivert and musky patchouli – with a swill of amber whisky” this is a scent which gently warms a room with its soft, but efficacious aroma. Cue the hygge vibes.
If you’re in need of lending a little cosiness to your home, then a beautiful warming candle scent may be just the thing you require.
Take some time to explore the gorgeous scents above, and snap up whichever one takes your fancy.
Warning: your time spent indoors will likely shoot up, but then again, I wouldn’t be complaining about that either . . . !
What’s Your Take?
Are there any brands or scents you love which you’d like to add into the mix?
Love, Monica x
