I love hats. I’ve always been someone that makes a B-line for a beret, or happily pops a fedora on to top off an outfit.
I know however, that this is not the case for many. People tend to say they’re either a ‘hat person’ or not, but it’s my belief that everyone is secretly a hat person – they just haven’t found their perfect partner!
In a bid to help you to narrow down your headwear choices, I’ve rounded up three of my favourite hat styles.
You’ll see that they all lend a different vibe to an outfit – that is otherwise completely the same!
Have a peruse and let me know which style you like the best, and which side of the ‘hat-wearing-fence’ you sit on!
3 Classic Hat Styles
For Even The Most Hat-Shy
The beret has made a major comeback this season. I can barely make it five images on Instagram before I see another one of these Francophile beauties pop up! Amongst the best wearers? Liv Purvis has it nailed for me.
In fact, I think I was kind of wearing my beret wrong in these photos (should have been pushed to the back ‘just so’) but hey, I’m not mad.
I’ve rounded up a few other options too which are all rather nice and affordable. I’m particularly partial to this star motif version from Accessorize.
MY BERET EDIT
My love for the fedora runs so deep!
When I first started The Elgin Avenue I wore a fedora almost on the daily. Oli would buy me one as a gift for birthdays and Christmas, and I never felt more put together than when I was wearing one.
Somewhere along the way I kind of forgot about fedoras, and I’m SO glad they’re back on rotation in my wardrobe!
This stunning one is by Jess Collett Milliner and it has the craziest story behind it! I was attending a local fair with Oli (can you tell we live in the countryside 😂?!) and there was this beautiful stall with hats. I got to trying some on, and a lovely lady approached introducing herself as the designer. We chatted, and found out we had friends in common (SMALL world!), and Jess ended up gifting me a hat! It was the kindest gesture, and in a world of frequent gifting for bloggers this felt really personal and sweet.
Jess’s hats are all crafted by her in Notting Hill, and they range from special occasion couture pieces (seriously, click on through – they’re stunning!), to wearable day to day beauties like this one!
I am so glad that mine and Jess’s paths crossed so serendipitously! You can check out all of Jess’s designs here, and I’ve rounded up some other fedora options below too.
On the high street Reiss have the best mid-range selection I’ve seen, and I purchased this blush coloured Fedora from Oliver Bonas earlier this season too – it reminds me of this look on Nathalie Kelley from Dynasty which I LOVE.
MY FEDORA EDIT
The Baker Boy Cap
Keira Knightley. Love Actually.
Shall I leave it there?!
Love Actually is possibly my favourite film of all time, and the scene where Keira Knightley turns up proffering Banoffee Pie in exchange for a peep at the wedding video filmed by the man that’s secretly in love with her is TOO GOOD!
In all honesty, I didn’t like baker boy hats for a VERY long time. And then this year, I did 🙋🏻
This one is from Topshop and ticks all my boxes. I like it styled especially with a vintage-y vibe, so smokey eyes and a nude lip work a treat for a 60s homage.
Again, I’ve rounded up my faves below.
MY BAKER BOY EDIT
A Parting Note On Hat Hair . . .
It can be tricky to navigate your ‘do when wearing a hat. My preference is pretty much the same, no matter what the millinery: loose beach waves, or a neat chignon at the nape of the neck with a few face-framing bits falling loose.

What’s Your Take?
Are you a hat fan? AND crucially, which of the styles above gets your vote?
