I truly love this time of year, and in order to fully enjoy it, I’ve been thinking recently about how to cope with Christmas overwhelm. Over the past few weeks I’ve been feeling stretched for time, and as such it’s been more challenging to enjoy the fun elements of Christmas.
In today’s post I’ve teamed up with Actimel and their #StayStrong campaign, to share one smart trick we can all look to employ to overcome feelings of overwhelm at this time of year.

Don’t let your vitality bucket run dry
2016 is going to go down as ‘the year of podcasts’ for me. I am totally hooked on a handful I regularly listen to.
One of my favourite podcasts is Happier by Gretchen Rubin and Elizabeth Craft. It’s an uplifting podcast which shares actionable tips about living a happier life.
In episode 94 Gretchen and Elizabeth interview author Jonathan Fields about his book How To Live A Good Life – which is about filling up three core life ‘buckets’ in order to live – you guessed it! – a good life.
The buckets are: Contribution (work), Vitality (health and wellbeing) and Connection (personal relationships).
I found this framework fascinating – boiled down to it – it totally makes sense! If you feel depleted in one area of your life, it affects that sense of ‘balance’ overall.
For me, and as Jonathan shares in the podcast, the ‘Vitality’ bucket can be the one people most neglect.
My personal feeling of ‘balance’ has been front and centre of my focus this year, but as I’ve got busier, and my time more stretched over the Christmas period, I have been guilty of letting my exercise routine slip, and have been more inclined to opt for convenient food rather than planned meals.
As of this week, I’ve been focusing on filling up my ‘Vitality’ area of life once more.
Practices like meditating and walking have immediately made me feel more at ease. I’ve also been focusing on turning down convenient food, and instead have been planning food shops.
It’s so easy to think that by de-prioritising things which feel like they will take up your (already stretched) time that you’ll be taking away from ‘more pressing’ issues, when in fact a sense of balance, whatever that may look like for you, underpins everything we do.

Don’t let you ‘Vitality Bucket’ run dry. Prioritise your own feeling of balance ahead of all other commitments.
