When I was younger, and summer would roll on round, I’d gravitate towards beach wear like it was exclusively the only section of my wardrobe I’d wear June to September. Whilst this method left me with MANY a printed kaftan, lightweight cotton dresses (which were almost always see-through, ‘cos y’know is was BEACH wear) I discovered that I had a distinct lack of summer clothes I could actually wear away from the beach.
And specifically summer clothes I could wear day to day, when it was hot, in normal life.
Enter the section of my wardrobe I like to call ‘summer in the city’.
NB: I love just saying those words!
Today I am partnering with Crew Clothing Company to share one of my fail safe summer in the city outfits with you, and my method for approaching day to day dressing in the heat.

HOW TO DRESS FOR SUMMER IN THE CITY
1. Go for natural fabrics –
This is the secret to EVERYTHING in the heat!
Have you ever wondered why Mediterranean women can wear a seemingly covered-up outfit in the heat, and still look totally relaxed? It’s all in the fabric.
If you are dressing for work in the heat of the city, you don’t have to sacrifice your smart style – just focus on well-chosen fabrics like silk and cotton.
I wore this combination of a classic silk shirt, khaki cotton trousers and simple tan sandals all day in Menorca recently. Although the temperature wasn’t scalding, it was hot and I was glad to be wearing light separates. You could totally wear this look in the office – simply swap the sandals for smart flats, and the holiday accessories for your day-to-day work pieces.
2. Separates are your best friends –
Whilst I am ALL for a cute summer dress, there is something about separates which lends a smart preppy twist. I love the look of a crisp shirt tucked into shorts for instance too – very Olivia Palermo. *All hail*.
Look for a handful of tops, trousers and skirts which you can mix and match when the heat is high. A lot of these items can work for your autumn, and even winter wardrobe too when layered up.
3. Select items in a cohesive colour palette –
I used to gravitate towards neon everything in the summer, heat = COLOUR for me. I still adore colour, but I’ve come to realise that I get SO much more use out of pieces in a cohesive, relatively neutral colour palette. I then add pops of colour via my accessories, lipstick or the odd standout clothing item.
Over the summer months I really love a colour palette of white, khaki, tan, denim, dove grey and black (although I like to look for interesting textures with black in the summer).
Once you have chosen your own palette, shopping and dressing becomes a breeze! You know that if you purchase ‘x’ it will go with ‘y & z’ already in your wardrobe. It also makes packing SO much easier, as you can take a few separates you know you can mix and match.
Crew have some great summer separates, and they’ve even put together a handy city escape packing edit which you can view here. I’m particularly fond of the V-neck ‘Foxy’ jumper which looks perfect for covering up if there’s a little chill.
How do you guys deal with the summer heat? Which items do you reach for? AND what would your summer colour palette look like?
Love, Monica x
