Whichever way you spin it – great makeup or ‘that glow’ . . . it all starts with gorgeous skin.
I’ve been through my ups and downs with my skin, from teenage acne, to hormonal lumps and bumps, to generally sallow-looking skin – I know it sucks when you have a bad skin day and you just want to hide.
On the makeup and skin products side – again I’ve done the rounds. Certain foundations just work, and others go patchy and dry on me. Some concealers make blemishes disappear – hallelujah! – and others draw attention to them.
Today I am sharing five products which feel like they’ve finally given me that ‘aha’ moment with my ‘glowing skin regime’, 5 oroducts which will help you genuinely achieve ‘that glow’ . . . that time when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and think, “hey, I’m having a good skin day” – and at the moment (whisper it because I majorly fear a jinx!) those good skin days are a lot more often than the bad ones. I attribute this good skin run to these products, as well as a lifestyle change I’m going to touch on in this post too.
OK, let’s get started . . .
My skin type is . . .
I started out in my teenage years with combination skin, oil would gather around my nose, chin and forehead and the rest felt pretty normal. Over the years I feel that my skin has veered more towards ‘normal’ all over (ish!). I have been using an antibiotic cream from my doctor to treat what was my teenage – now in to my twenties – breakouts. I use the antibiotic treatment a few days a week now where once I used it every day. The little pimples that used to form on my forehead have stopped, but in its place I have the occasional hormonal breakout that is blockbuster bad – one or two spots that feel horrendous.
One thing that surprised me last year, is that I was told I had dry skin, something which I never would have attributed to myself as I was so used to thinking I had oily skin – turns out you can have both, and by nourishing your skin for the dryness you actually control the oil production – win/win.
Overall now, I would say I have fairly normal skin, which occasionally throws out a hormonal breakout (thanks for that!) and can also get quite dry if I don’t manage my products, and lifestyle.
The products I am sharing with you today have 100% changed my skincare and makeup routine for the better, they help me feel great with or without makeup and I am so excited to share them with you!
5 PRODUCTS WHICH WILL HELP YOU GENUINELY ACHIEVE ‘THAT GLOW’
Let’s start with one of my favourite ever products – the Elemis Pro-collagen Cleansing Balm. Long time readers will know that this is one of my most-treasured beauty regime items. Recently I tried swapping it out for something different – which equally had great reviews – but nothing treats my skin, and actually makes a positive difference, like this does.
In order to apply the cleansing balm you simply take a small amount from the tub, and apply it either over your makeup to dissolve it, or on your bare face once you have already removed your makeup. If I have a full face on I use a makeup remover wipe first, and then the balm second – you wouldn’t believe how much more makeup comes off! If I am only wearing a little skin makeup I’ll use the balm for everything. I use cotton pads soaked in a little water to remove the balm but you can use a muslin or similar.
The results – for one, I have had a lot less breakouts since using the Elemis Pro-collagen Cleansing Balm, I am a bit of a skincare-sceptic and never believe anything will actually work but this 100% does, and I know it’s not just so for me – so many of my friends have started to use the cleansing balm since I probably talked their ears off about it and they too have found it to work for them.
The funny thing is, at 26, I never would have thought that I would need to look at pro-collagen products, or anti-ageing but as you’ll see in this post – they’re the ones I’ve found really work for me right now.
And, as we have probably all heard, prevention is everything.
About that anti-ageing thing . . . ! I hadn’t got on board with serums at all until I started using Lancôme’s Advanced Génefique Youth Activating Concentrate. It’s funny because I actually rediscovered it during my KonMari cleanup of my beauty products and suddenly I thought “hey, I’m going to give that a try” – the very first morning after I used it I noticed a difference in my skin, it looked hydrated, perkier, and all-round fresher.
I apply my serum as the last step in my skincare regime at night. You can use it again in the morning too, I tend to do so only if I’m having a no-makeup day.
One of my friends had told me that Lancôme’s skincare was the best on the market, and I have to say that I’m totally on board for trying more now – the youth activating concentrate delivers on what it promises and more.
Guys! Oh my gosh I am so excited to talk to you about Pixi Cosmetics. I was first introduced to the brand via Birchbox, which included a Pixi lip balm in one of their monthly subscription boxes. The lip balm was really lovely and the name stuck in my mind . . . fast forward a few months and I was invited to the re-vamped Carnaby St store of Pixi.
These two products have made THE biggest difference to my makeup routine – ‘that glow’ is definitely aided by these.
The Glowtion Daydew moisturiser is like a travelling soft light for your makeup, it creates a genuine radiance (which surely is what we’re all looking for?!) which just makes you glow – and not in an OTT “jeez, how much highlighter can you use?!” way.
I have used illuminating moisturisers before and they’ve always felt heavy, but this one is so light, it actually comforts my skin rather than clogging it.
The Illuminating Tint & Conceal tinted moisturiser is my go-to makeup partner for the Glowtion Daydew. Admittedly it sounds like your doubling up on moisturiser, but I find that even if I do use a tinted version I like to start with a classic moisturiser beneath – the tint always comes out more evenly on me. This tinted moisturiser is so light, it doesn’t feel like you are wearing anything on your skin, yet when you look in the mirror you can actively see a perfected complexion. I tend to use my own concealer rather than the one included in this tint & conceal set, I can totally see how handy it would be if you want to reduce the number of products you take with you on a given day.
I’ve always leant towards using the same concealer on my blemishes as my under-eye circles, and really I’ve never noticed any adverse effect from doing so – but having tried the Estēe Lauder Brightening Serum + Concealor I am now ALL about starting my under-eye coverup with a brightening serum.
I use the serum end of the product, gently dotted under my eyes, and blended in. I still use my own concealer on top normally, though the product does have a concealer end of its own that you can use instead. I am just super loyal to the Maybelline concealer I have been using forever – more of which you can read here.
As I’ve progressed through my twenties I have definitely noticed more visible shadows under my eyes, they’re not really bad but I’ve paid more attention to giving them a helping hand in my beauty routine. The brightening serum in this product definitely creates a radiant finish, it might just be me but I think that it makes your eyes sparkle a little more too!
These products help to achieve ‘that glow’ and I have genuinely noticed a big difference in using every single one of them. To truly achieve ‘that glow’ though? It starts from the inside.
Recently I saw a personal trainer for a short run of sessions to help me recover from an ongoing injury. At the beginning of this year I decided I just wanted to FEEL good, and strong, and I have actually committed to an exercise regime. Alongside working out more, the great side-effect is that you naturally want to eat better. Your body actually craves good food and rejects the crap. A combination of regular achievable exercise, healthy eating, and focusing on my overall wellbeing has definitely helped me feel calmer and treat my body better. Which insofacto shows on the outside too.
A combination of wellbeing, and well-chosen products, is in my mind the partnership which will allow you to achieve ‘that glow’ for yourself.
What are your secrets to achieving ‘that glow’ guys? I absolutely adore this article by Garance Doré which goes more in depth as to the various elements in our lives we can pay attention to, to help us achieve, as Garance puts it – L’éclat. L’éclat is something I am super interested in too, so I’d love to know your thoughts on it . . . I think there’s another future blog post in there around it . . . !
Love, Monica x
